Translating and Interpreting in Portuguese Sign Language

    Course details

  • Course objectives

The degree course in Translation and Interpreting in Portuguese Sign Language at ESE Setúbal is the result of the adaptation to the Bologna process of the two-year degree (3 years + 2 years) which, under the same name, was in force at this school from 1997 to 2006. It thus inherits the capital of experience accumulated during the period of validity of that degree, the first of its kind in Portugal and, for several years, the only one. The syllabus for the current course in Translation-Interpretation of LGP (organised along the lines of the Bologna process) did not introduce a radical change in relation to the course that preceded it. It is structured on the basis of the skills that students should acquire or develop throughout the course, namely in its various specific and transversal training components: Portuguese Sign Language; Theory and Practice of Translation and Interpreting; History and Culture of the Deaf Community; Ethics and Professional Deontology; Portuguese Linguistics and Linguistics of LGP; Portuguese Language and Intervention in Professional Contexts, aka ‘internships’.
