Miguel Lourenço, a professor at the Polytechnic University of Setúbal, was one of the keynote speakers at the 7th International Congress of fib—the International Federation for Structural Concrete—held in Lisbon from June 15 to 19.
This conference is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious events dedicated to structural concrete, bringing together researchers and professionals from around the world under the theme “Structural Concrete 2050: Towards Carbon Neutrality, AI Design, and Robotic Construction”—discussing the future of concrete construction, from carbon neutrality to artificial intelligence and robotic construction.
In his presentation, titled “Stress Field Models: A Powerful Engineering Tool from Conceptual Design to Detailed Design,” Miguel Lourenço shared his experience in applying these models throughout the entire structural design process, from conceptual design to detailed design.
With nearly 30 years of experience in the design and coordination of bridges, buildings, industrial structures, and renovation projects, he is the CEO and a partner at JSJ – Structural Engineering since 2005, holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (2010), and is the recipient of the Ferry Borges Award (2008). He is also the coordinator of the fib Working Group WP2.2.4, “Strut-and-Tie Models,” and was awarded the National Civil Engineering Prize by the Order of Engineers in 2024. He has been a visiting professor at IPS since 2013, teaching in the areas of building design, renovation, and structural modeling.
Congratulations to Professor Miguel Lourenço on this international recognition!
